6 Ideas for the Perfect Video Date

We’re lucky to live in a time where we can talk to each other face-to-face (albeit through a screen) no matter where we are in the world so long as there’s a stable Internet connection. Unsurprisingly, that means more and more of us are in relationships that may span hundreds or thousands of miles, effectively making conventional dating dynamics obsolete. So how do you make an online date feel as intimate from a distance? Here are six tips for how to make your next video call just a little more special.

Make extra time for your SO.

Maybe you live in dramatically different time zones, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your partner. And if you’re used to talking through a screen and check in with each other regularly already, you may find yourself getting distracted by the dozen other tabs you have open, but resist the temptation to lose focus on your partner.  Setting aside some time to sit down and really talk with them and give them your full attention shows that you care.

Look your best.

When you’re always having to talk through a screen, usually from the privacy of your own home, you’ve probably gotten used to seeing each other in all states of dress, especially if you’ve been in the relationship for a while. Imagine you are actually meeting your partner in person. How would you want to look? Dress for the occasion! Put on that shirt she says brings out the color of your eyes, or wear that dress he loves seeing you in. Style your hair. Put on your favorite jewelry if you want. Looking your best will make you feel good about yourself, and your partner will appreciate the effort.

Set the mood.

Similar to the last point, there’s also no reason to let your surroundings be anything less than romantic. I’m not saying you need to hang hearts all around your room or throw rose petals everywhere, but you can tidy things up. Do you have laundry lying around? Pick it up. Trash building up on your desk? Throw it out. Even if you can’t visit each other in person, you want your space to look inviting!

Eat a nice meal together.

Okay, so maybe you can’t actually go out together, but that’s no excuse not to eat together. Cook your favorite food or order in from your favorite restaurant. Pour yourself a glass of wine or grab a beer. Both of you get to choose whatever makes you happy and still enjoy a date with each other–no reservations required!

Go down memory lane.

If you’ve been in the relationship for a long time, especially if you’ve spent any part of it in person, it can be really nice to reminisce on the good times you’ve spent together. You may find yourselves falling for each other all over again as you remember all of the moments that made you fall in love in the first place.

Or fantasize about the future.

Regardless of where exactly you are in your relationship journey, if you are in a long-distance relationship, then you know that fantasizing about the future is a constant. Whether it’s just the next trip to see your significant other or closing the distance permanently, the two of you can spend time planning out all of the details, and what could be more exciting and reaffirming than that?
